Does the plugin fit all cart items into one package or multiples of a single size, by default?

This article will tell you whether the WooCommerce FedEx Shipping Plugin will fill all cart items into one package or multiples of a single size. Read on to know more about it.

Customer :

I have a question about having multiple custom packaging options. My question is, does the plugin, by default, fit all cart items into one package or multiples of a single size?

In other words, does it keep looking for a larger box that fits until it finds one, rather than split the cart into multiple packages.

The plugin currently has the feature of fitting all cart items into one or more packages based on the type of packing selected in the plugin settings. The three parcel packing options provided by the plugin are:

  • Pack Items Individually: In this option, each item in the cart is packed separately. Total shipping cost is calculated by adding shipping cost of each item.
    For example, the shipping cost of item X is $10. If the customer adds two quantities of item X to the cart, then total shipping cost is $10 x 2, which is $20.
  • Pack into boxes with weight and dimensions: If packing items individually does not suit your business, then you can define required box sizes under Box Dimensions section. All the cart items are packed into custom boxes defined in box dimensions settings. The best fit box is automatically chosen from the defined boxes. This is the recommended option. Read setting up box dimensions to understand more in detail.
  • Weight based: In this option, the weight of all the cart item is summed up and passed to FedEx API to get real time rates.

Note: The plugin does not split the cart into various packages. We request you to let us know the reason of splitting the cart.


Customer :

I am using weight and dimensions setting at the moment. I am hoping that the default option is to not split the cart. Also, if we don’t have a packaging type available that fits all the items in the cart. What happens then?.

Let me explain the packing type with a simple scenario.
Suppose you have configured one box of dimensions 3x3x3, and a product has dimensions 3x3x1.

So ideally only three products can fit into this box. Hence, if you select five products in the cart, then three products are packed into one box (of dimensions 3x3x3), and the remaining two products are packed into a separate box (of dimensions 3x3x3).

Therefore, the packing completely depends on the box created by you.

    When I generate packages and it calculates 2 packages, is it possible to delete one of these packages? The scenario is after auto package generation, I decide to use a different box that will hold all items so I need to delete one of the auto generated packages otherwise I’ll have an undesired FedEx shipment.

      Hi Roger,

      Currently its not possible to delete the auto generated packages, since the customer would have paid for two packages while calculating the shipping cost in the cart or checkout page. If you want to use only one box for the shipment you need to define a bigger box in the plugin settings that can accommodate all the items on cart, or the box you actually use for shipment.

      If you’re not sure about which box you’re using for packing you can also use the weight based packing, then all items will be packed in a single box based on the weight limit set.
